It is with a real sense of satisfaction and pride that we can look back at the longevity of Le Verre de Vin wine preservation systems and the relationships that are formed as a result. And one such long-term relationship is with The Belmond Mount Nelson.

Our partnership goes back fourteen years. The iconic Grand Old Lady (Mount Nelson) was one of the first establishments in South Africa to serve champagne by the glass in their Planet Bar. In offering champagne by the glass they quickly found that their losses were great and so they decided to look for a wine / champagne preservation system to mitigate those losses.  And this is where the relationship with Le Verre de Vin was born.

They decided to purchase a Le Verre de Vin machine, which quickly obviated all their losses.  Due to the success of their first Le Verre de Vin system, within two years they had bought a second machine – and this one is still in use today – twelve years later and still going strong!!!  What better return on investment could you ask for?

We recently had the chance to catch up with Johann Badenhorst the Food and Beverage Manager at The Mount Nelson.  This gave us a chance to discuss with him how Le Verre de Vin is an integral part of The Belmond Mount Nelson client offering.

Johann was first introduced to Le Verre de Vin when he started at The Belmond Mount Nelson in August 2015.  Johann quickly realised that in terms of wine preservation Le Verre de Vin creates longevity in the quality of an open wine, especially premium products that generally have specific uptake less frequently, so wastage is reduced drastically.

On reflecting on how consistent The Belmond Mount Nelson has been in their wine by the glass offering, since they first started all those year ago, we asked Johann what it was that influenced this decision to maintain an extensive wine by the glass offering. He responded, ”We pride ourselves in offering the best that our wine regions can offer, both in terms of variety and selection, as most of our guests are well travelled international clientele that have experience with global wine offerings. So in our having an extensive selection available by the glass, they have the opportunity to truly experience our South African Wines. “

An additional benefit to The Belmond Mount Nelson in offering a wine/champagne by the glass selection, is that many of their leisure guests stay for an extensive period. This way they can choose to have a new selection of wines and champagnes to savour every day.

Many of their guests want to have the truly South African experience during their stay and Johann believes that The Belmond Mount Nelson has some of the most exceptional wines in the world right on their doorstep,  and the demand for local offerings will always be high on their clienteles’ expectations.   As an example, Chenin Blanc and Pinotage are two typically South African varietals that they  like to sell by the glass, and the South African MCC’s are very popular with their guests as they are on a par with French champagnes but a fraction of the price.

The Belmond Mount Nelson fulfils this expectation of a South African wine by the glass experience by being able to preserve their wine/champagne and in teaming up with some amazing winemakers, producers and distributors to refresh their wine selection every year. They also offer unique boutique wines, some of which they have exclusive access to and this adds to the exceptional memories The Belmond Mount Nelson can create.

Some of the real benefits to The Belmond Mount Nelson in using their Le Verre de Vin wine preservation system are:

  • Their wines will still be as fresh as the day you opened it.
  • Their wastage has seen a major reduction due to having the correct tools in place.
  • They have the ability to expand their premium selection, and more will be added in due course.
  • They all find the system is very easy to use.
  • Due to the flexibility of installation, they are able to keep the system back of house, to maintain the specific interior design guidelines within the public spaces of our Grand Old Lady.
  • Longevity and robustness of the system, twelve years in use and still going strong tells a lot about the quality of the system – Johann says …” Other than being a great system to use, it has proven to be very beneficial to us for many years now. “

As we contemplated wine trends going forward, Johann was clear that their guests, especially their loyal local guests, will always appreciate new introductions to unique wines in the market, which is equally enjoyed by their international clientele. He is aware that boutique wineries remain a firm contender in the larger dominating wine markets and they do like to bring this into their offerings.  Wine by the glass is here to stay and they are at the forefront of contributing to the expansion of this trend.

In closing off  we asked how Johann would advise anyone considering a Le Verre de Vin system and he said, “ Invest and spend the money, as you will only save more money in the years to come, money that can be invested in growing your wine list!”

Many thanks, Johann, for taking the time to share your experience of Le Verre de Vin at the Grand Old Lady!!
