Ahh….. the magic of finding one of Cape Town’s hidden gems. On Sunday we headed off into the Constantia Hills –the day was glorious, the sun was shining with an intensity that you can only find in Cape Town in autumn, and little did we know that we were about to have a really special experience – wine tasting with a difference at Constantia Glen
We parked at the top of the long drive and were taken aback by the absolute beauty that awaited us. As we walked to our table, we realised that setting was perfect, rolling hills in all directions, with the mountains as a backdrop to it all – you have no idea that the city centre is 15 minutes away!!
So what make this an experience rather than just a wine tasting? You do need to book as they are always busy. The idea is that you order one of their boards… cheese or charcuterie or anti-pasta or biltong…. And the wine tasting happens as you eat. You can select what wine tasting you want… whites only, reds only, a mix, premium blends…. And the first wines are brought as you wait for your food.
Josh was the person serving us – he is highly knowledgeable and made us feel comfortable with a great description of the Constantia Glen wines and he was not thrown at all by the various questions that we asked. And when you are ready, you are still eating then the next wines come….. the wine tasting becomes a part of the meal …. so it’s very relaxed, very sociable, with delicious foods all accompanied by sublime wines – I have to say this is their wines are the nicest that I have tasted in a long while. All in all, a special wine tasting experience in the most magnificent setting!
We had gone with the idea of seeing if a Le Verre de Vin system would benefit them, however after Josh answered some of my questions, I realised that they have little need for a wine preservation system as they are using most of their wine up every day in this very effective form of wine tasting, and if anything is left at the end of the day, it is quickly used up the following day. And they are well known to the overseas market which means that they are busy every day. A highly enjoyable and highly effective way of offering wine tasting.
Constantia Glen wines are not available in retail outlets and are offered in only a handful of exclusive restaurants. Much of their wine is sold to the overseas market. You are able to buy wine at Constantia Glen – I am pleased to say that we came home with a couple of bottles for ourselves!!
And perhaps in reading this, you may wonder if a Le Verre de Vin system would work for your establishment, as you would like to offer a whole range of wine by the glass and are concerned about wastage. Le Verre de Vin could would allow you to offer great premium wines by the glass knowing that you can preserve each opened bottle for 21 days, maintaining the freshness for 3 weeks.
