Don’t you just love it when you anticipate something and it exceeds those expectations by so much more. That’s what happened for us on Saturday night. We had booked to go to 95 Keerom in Cape Town earlier in the week and not having been there before, I was anticipating a good evening out with some real quality Italian food. And that’s what we got and so much more.
The first thing you notice as you walk into 95 Keerom, is the serenity of the under-sated elegance. You just know that you are going to be well-looked after the minute you walk through the door – Steven, the manager was at the door to greet us.
95 Keerom is a double-storey restaurant and we were seated upstairs in a quiet spot which suited the two of us perfectly. Our waiter’s name was Brian and he was attentive, knowledgeable about both the food and the wine (a must in my book), and he did just the right amount of hovering, which meant that he was tuned into our needs before we needed to ask for anything!
So as you sit down, the most delicious basket of bread is placed on the table, – my partner’s ideal start to a meal – a variety of really good quality bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar accompanied by a great glass of wine! You do not often see such attention to those little details and it really does set the tone for the evening. With the bread already there, we were presented with the wine menus.
It pleases me no end to go out to eat and to have a choice of wines to have by the glass. And the reason being, I probably only want a glass, maybe two. And my partner will have two, possibly three – however, he wanted white and I am a red wine drinker! And this is where having that choice is so key for us!
So we each could have our wine of choice, without there being any waste on our part or on the part of 95 Keerom. The reason why 95 Keerom are able to offer a number of wines by the glass is because they have a Le Verre de Vin wine preservation system in place – discreetly mounted on the wall – with easy access by the barman. On chatting to Steven about it, he said that Le Verre de Vin is key to their being able to offer a number of wines by the glass, confident in the knowledge that the wine will be perfectly preserved and still fresh for the next person wanting some of the same wine by the glass. While Le Verre de Vin preserves wine for 21 days, they do find that a because of demand, a bottle is usually finished with 3 days and they know it is always as fresh as the day it was opened. Steven also confirmed that the demand for wine by the glass keeps growing and with that you need to have a system like Le Verre de Vin in place.
Just to come back to our meal – I had the most scrumptious seared scallops of rib eye – it was hearty and flavoursome and extremely satisfying on all sorts of levels. My partner had slow cooked springbuck in a tomato based sauce – again really delectable. We ended off the meal with a rather decadent crème brulee – my all-time favourite dessert!!
So if you are looking for a delicious meal out, and like to have the option of wine by the glass to accompany your meal, then we can highly recommend 95 Keerom – the whole experience is about making your evening feel special – a great way to spend a Saturday evening.
