Don’t you just love it when someone has a piece of world class technology and then uses it so effectively that it really lives up to its potential ? Angelo’s Stanley in Port Elizabeth is just one such restaurant. Angelo’s in Port Elizabeth is a chain of restaurants that has been around for 25 years.  Their flagship restaurant is Angelo’s Stanley, which has a focus on offering Artisan style food and I was most intrigued to chat to Chris Simpson, a director at Angelo’s, about their Stanley branch, particularly about their wine offering.

Chris has many years of experience in the restaurant trade and he clearly takes great pleasure in talking about how they offer something unique to the Port Elizabeth market. He told me that Angelo’s pride themselves on being a value-brand and they are constantly looking at how they can add value to their concept, all the while keeping the spend per head down (for their customers). One of the innovative ways they do this is by offering wine by the glass only.  This means that they don’t offer wine by the bottle on the menu – only wine by the glass – so if you want a bottle you pay for four glasses. Great concept!!

About 2 years ago, when they were redefining the Angelo’s Stanley offering, and were looking at how to go the Artisan route, Paul, the owner of Angelo’s decided to revamp their wine list, as he wanted to offer more variety.  In all their restaurants they have kept their wine list small because they do offer it by the glass and want to keep wastage to a minimum.  With the new restaurant concept, they decided to expand their wine list substantially, and to include bubbly in the offering too – still keeping their whole list by the glass.  And this is where the world class technology of Le Verre de Vin comes into play so beautifully – because of the viability of Le Verre de Vin as a wine preservation system, Angelo’s chose to use Le Verre de Vin which immediately allowed them to continue offering wine by the glass AND to expand their range substantially, without any wine wastage.  A perfect example of how Le Verre de Vin complements their value-add ethos.

The installation of Le Verre de Vin was made possible by the Vinimark / Le Verre de Vin Programme.  What Vinimark offers to restaurants is, if they agree to have a range of the Vinimark wine on their wine list, then Vinimark could give that restaurant a Le Verre de Vin system to use, free of charge – Don’t you just love the symmetry of that – how there is a benefit to all parties and everyone wins?  Chris tells me that this programme works very well for Angelo’s and that it runs very smoothly with weekly visits from the sales rep from Vinimark, checking in to see how things are going.

The use of Le Verre de Vin by Angelo’s Stanley has been so successful that they are currently looking to add a system to each of their other branches as well, to extend their wine by the glass offering in their other restaurants too.

Chris is highly complimentary of Le Verre de Vin.  Above all, he finds that it works effectively. It is attractive and looks really neat in their bar.  It is compact and does not take up a lot of space and it is simple to use, so it easy to train staff to use it. They find that the system works very well, and are really pleased that it works so effectively for bubbly as well.  He believes that part of the success of offering a wide range of wines by the glass, is also ensuring that you have a tight stock control system in place and so they do a stock control check of their wines every day.

He is clear that without Le Verre de Vin, they would not be able to offer the range of wines that they do, by the glass.  It affords them the opportunity to offer quality wines too, which supports their focus of giving people options, and see this as another one of their value-adds.  And it also gives Angelo’s the opportunity to look at other options in the future, like possibly offering food pairing by suggesting wines with certain dishes (he calls this suggestive selling), trying new wines…. there are many options…
