Audacia Wines in Stellenbosh have just won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals for their first ever wine that has been created by using indigenous Rooibos and Honeybush wood. This is the world’s first wine that is sulphur free and has no added preservatives. The launch of this new category of wine will mean that people who are allergic to sulphur dioxide and other preservatives, can enjoy a glass of wine without the side effects like headaches.

How did this all come about? The owners of Audacia wines decided that they wanted to find a local alternative to the imported oak wood products20t used in the wine making process. They wanted an innovative means to create a truly indigenous South African flavour for their wines. So, after months of hard work and research, it was at the end of a particularly long day that Trevor Strydom’s (proprietor of Audacia Wines) daughter made him a cup of rooibos tea. This was his “eureka moment”, and so began the exciting development of the first Rooibos and Honeybush- infused  wine and the  Merlot from the 2013 harvest was released.

The Rooibos and Honeybush plant are naturally high in anti-oxidants , have no caffeine and are low in tannin levels compared to other wood sources used in the wine making process. These two woods impart distinctive flavours including tobacco-like smokiness, hints of vanilla, cherry and black pepper. Michael Van Niekerk is the wine maker behind this world first Rooibos wine.
