I recently had the pleasure of chatting to Pete de Bruin, co-founder of The Foodbarn. It was very inspiring to meet someone who is so passionate about what they do. We got chatting about the tapas evenings that they have at the deli and in particular the Tapas Wine Flight – where you can choose 3 fingers of any 3 wines off their wine list for only R45.00 to go with your tapas – what an innovative idea!
Part of what fuels Pete’s passion is that he likes to challenge people to try something new, to get them out of their comfort zones. AND he likes to showcase really great wines that are not well known, and which often come from the smaller, off-the-beaten track wine makers. He is also believes that doing something a little different is what sets The Foodbarn apart from others and what draws their customers to them. So his wine lists are dynamic, always changing and will ALWAYS feature wines that have been made with huge passion. To quote from their wine list: “Over the years we have tasted much wine and in so doing, we have met many inspiring wine folk who have shared their passion and delicious wines with us … they have become our friends. Quite often, they bring us wines that are as little off the beaten track … wines you might not ordinarily try … this really excites us as we get a chance to explore, to play, and to share with you. And so with the driver to offer something different, and to challenge people’s palates, the idea of the Tapas Wine Flight was born – a desire to offer an experience that plays with your senses, that will give you a variety of tastes and textures, an opportunity to try a number of different wines as a part of the whole tapas experience. And it has gone extremely well. The Foodbarn customers love the idea and many come back time and again to experience, not just a selection of delicious tapas, but a range of new wines as well – without the need to buy a whole bottle at a time. And this is how Pete gets people to get out of their comfort zone, to explore, to experience, to LIVE a little more.
And to Pete’s mind, the whole experience would not be possible without their Le Verre de Vin wine preservation system. It is integral to the tapas / wine offering and really supports them in being able to offer a real taste experience, that for many is something different, and immensely appealing.

Some further advice from Pete to those who are going to invest in a Le Verre de Vin system – ensure that your staff are properly trained in the wines you are offering – they need to know everything about each wine and need to be able to talk knowledgeably with any patron about any of the wines. This is especially critical if you are going to use Le Verre de Vin successfully by offering your whole range of wines by the glass.
So the challenge to you is… What are you doing to create a different experience for your clientele? Is it not time for you to look at what wines you offer as a whole, and by the glass? Should you not be offering your whole wine list by the glass – allowing your customers to explore and experience a whole range of wines? Should you not have a world class wine preservation system, Le Verre de Vin, to do this? Is the time not NOW, just as the festive season is approaching?
