Owned and run by Clare and John Woodward, Frogitt & Vonkel Private Wine Merchants™ are considered the definitive suppliers of exclusive wines in South Africa and Namibia! They specialise in featuring small growers and boutique estates, and they guarantee complete exclusivity – you will not be able to buy these wines anywhere else but from them.

As time has progressed and their customer list has expanded substantially, Clare and John felt that it was time to give their distinctive brand a “bricks and mortar” presence. They wanted it to be a distinctive concept, so that both their customers who buy their wine directly from them, as well as the general public, could come and experience their brand values first hand.  And what better way to do that than to open a Wine Bar? And so the Frogitt and Vonkel Wine Bar opened its doors on the 7th December 2018!!

We recently did an interview with John to talk about the Frogitt and Vonkel Wine Bar and how Le Verre de Vin is an intrinsic element in their being able to offer each of their 30 plus local and international wines by the glass (and the bottle).

Both Clare and John believe that all that is great about Frogitt & Vonkel comes together in their flagship Frogitt and Vonkel Wine Bar in Bree Street.

While they offer more than 30 wines, and although the bar is new, their wine list has been honed by their customers over the past fourteen years. So when they made the decision to open the bar, they were very confident that wine lovers would enjoy the wines they were offering… and come back … And it has been going very well! What John finds is that they are attracting people who want to explore their unique list, and he finds that the imported wines are particularly popular.

When it came to the planning stages, Clare and John recognised the need to have a wine preservation system in place to be able to run a successful wine bar.  Without it they would be throwing money down the drain, so to speak!!

As they had decided to offer over 30 wines at any one time in the bar, and all of them are available by the glass, they realised that they simply could not offer this without a Le Verre de Vin wine preservation system. Their decision was utilise our very affordable rental programme and to rent a Le Verre de Vin Classic – a stylish addition to any bar.

The Le Verre de Vin Classic still wine and champagne or “dual” system preserves an unlimited number of opened bottles of still wines, sparkling wines and champagnes. By removing the oxygen to a precisely controlled level, Le Verre de Vin technology effectively preserves still wine without any risk to its subtle structure. Sparkling wines and champagnes are uniquely preserved by the introduction of a calibrated infusion of carbon dioxide.

Frogitt and Vonkel Wine Bar’s Le Verre de Vin Classic has been a key factor in the success of the bar so far.  It is easy to use, highly effective and keeps wastage to an absolute minimum.  It preserves both still and sparkling wine, as fresh as the day it is opened, for twenty-one days – no other system can offer that.  John says: ”People today want a choice of wine by the glass. This system definitely allows a bar to offer that.”

So if you are looking to enjoy some premium exclusive wines, along with delicious artisanal cheeses and locally produced charcuterie, then visit the Frogitt and Vonkel Wine Bar in Bree Street, Cape Town – your palate will thank you!!
