Ever had that feeling of the “right thing at the right time”? Just imagine how good that feels!! And… this is the sentiment under which Osetra in Kalk Bay opened it’s doors in October this year. And I would say that we have to agree!! My partner and I had the pleasure of experiencing this feeling of the right thing at the right time when we had an evening there this week!
Set in the quaint seaside village of Kalk Bay, one gets the sense that the concepts that Osetra is bringing to the community will add to the global appeal of Kalk Bay – something that both the locals and our international visitors can go to and KNOW that they are going to have a worthwhile experience.
The first and so highly important impact (and often what sets the tone for an evening), is how friendly and, for want of a better word,switched-on the staff are. They are friendly, attentive, aware and knowledgeable, making our experience really pleasurable.
The second impact is in having this incredible selection of 180 wines and you can have any of them by the glass!! This includes all still wines and all bubblies. And this is where the concept of the right thing at the right time is so significant for both us and for Osetra.
On chatting to Oscar Kotze, the restaurateur at Osetra, told me the background to being in a position to offer such a vast range of wines by the glass. So picture the scene…. Oscar had recently opened Osetra and our very own Ernest (Sales Director for Le Verre de Vin) was trying out the restaurant for the first time. As Oscar likes to do, he wandered round to chat to his customers and of course got talking to Ernest and Ernest ended up telling him about the benefits of having a Le Verre de Vin system in place:
- Able to preserve wine and bubbly for twenty-one days
- No more one house red and one house white
- All wine can be offered by the glass – with this comes a dramatic increase in wine sales
- Wastage is eliminated
- It is very easy to use, while being highly effective
Oscar, operating under this concept of being in the right place at the right time, immediately understood what a huge impact Le Verre de Vin would have on what he wanted to and ordered a machine. As a result he was able to grow to a wine list of 180 wines very quickly and has a view to expanding it to 250 wines in the near future. And the offering is extensive – any wine can be had by the bottle or by the glass. Oscar is full of ideas and constantly looks for ways to enhance the Osetra experience. As a result plans are now in place to offer a tasting glass as well for each wine, which allows you to have even more freedom in your choice of wine. And added to that Osetra has an off-consumption licence, which means that if you eat there and really enjoy the wine that you choose and want to take some home, you can buy your own bottles to take home –brilliant idea!
The third impact is the food. They pride themselves on being very selective about their sources of food, and take great care in perfecting each dish. My partner and I both opted for a fish dish,which were both really delicious. Fresh,melt in your mouth and extremely tasty!
To add to the experience, the overriding principle that Oscar feels is important – he does not believe that it is necessary to mark anything up beyond 40% – so he lives by the philosophy that when you eat at his restaurant, that you feel really satisfied in paying the bill – you have eaten well, you have drunk well and you have been fairly charged for the experience!
We had a wonderful evening at Osetra – we were well-looked after by the manager, Gwan, and our lovely waitress, Sharne. We each got to choose the wine that we wanted, our food was delicious and all in all it was a really great night out!! Maybe a visit there could be the right thing at the right time for you too!!
