Picture the scene…. it has been a scorcher of a day… one of those rare gorgeous Cape Town days, summer hot and no wind!!  Now it is around 6.30, sunset is not far off and we are sitting at the top of Constantia Nek, with this majestic view over the harbour-house-new-restaurantswhole of the valley to False Bay, a cool glass of wine in hand and waiting to be served, you can’t ask for a more perfect setting….. so, where was I?  Yes!! At the new Harbour House at Constantia Nek – where the ambience is set just right – light, bright, white – calm, serene, and conducive to a really good dining experience.

And we were not disappointed. We were seated at the open doors overlooking the lavender gardens, with an uninterrupted view over the Cape Flats all the way to the Hottentots Holland mountains. After such a baking hot day, it was the ideal place to be – in the gentle breeze with this amazing view – no wonder our food tasted so good!!  And all with a sense of intimacy, even though the restaurant was busy!

Our waiter was very knowledgeable and extremely friendly! My partner and I both chose the kingklip, which was extremely tasty.  Marrying the subtle citrus buttery flavours with the fish was well-received on the palate and we both nearly licked our plates clean!!

harbour-house-2The Harbour House Constantia Nek offers a well-rounded wine list with a number of wine by the glass options.  I chatted to the friendly manageress and she let me know that they were looking into investing in the Le Verre de Vin wine preservation system, like the one that they have at Harbour House in Kalk Bay.  She acknowledged that it would reduce their wine wastage, which at the moment is quite substantial, as they have no wine preservation system in place – and that if they had a system like Le Verre de Vin, that The Harbour House Constantia Nek would then be able to afford to offer an even wider range of wines by the glass, as this system would eliminate their wine wastage and would in actual fact substantially increase their wine profits.

Le Verre de Vin Classic Steel DualThe Constantia Nek is a such an iconic venue – with many wonderful memories made here for many people over the years, and I have no doubt that with the Harbour House here now – there are plenty more wonderful memories to be made.

I look forward to visiting The Harbour House at Constantia Nek again, as it is a special venue, and I look forward to having the option to choose any wine by the glass that they have on their winelist!
