When we get a hint that spring has arrived in Cape Town, I find it’s a great time to go to one of my favourite places and have a delicious celebratory meal, where we can sit outside so that we can really enjoy the warmth of the sun, especially after the extended cold that we seem to have had in Cape Town this winter … And one of the perfect places to do this is Forester’s Arms (fondly known as Forries) in Newlands, which is where we headed to on Saturday!!

There are a number of reasons why I like Forries

  • there is a great selection of food, even for picky LCHF eaters like me,
  • they are consistent in their quality of their food,
  • the food that they offer is prepared fresh on site, including every sauce,
  • part of the on-site preparation includes cutting their own meat and fish
  • their service is attentive and efficient
  • the setting is condusive to being sociable, whether you are inside or outside
  • AND….. they offer their WHOLE wine list by the glass.

Once we were seated outside in the courtyard, the first thing we looked at was the wine list.  It is an impressive list, so that you are spoilt for choice.  Every single wine, either still or sparkling is offered by the glass…expect for the Moet et Chandon!  The beauty of this offering is that in no way is anyone limited by what the other people are drinking.  Each person gets to choose exactly the wine that they like, and how much they want to drink too, without having to pay for a whole bottle.

My partner is a white wine lover, especially wooded Chardonnay, and he selected a Foothills Chardonnay described as having a flavour spectrum that includes peach and apricots with the oak portion showing as toasted almonds and becoming more savoury on the finish.  He enjoyed it so much that he had another glass!!

I am a red wine drinker and I settled on a La Motte Millennium which is described as: the nose of the wine reflects how it was made …raspberry (Merlot), a slight herbaceousness (Cabernet Franc) and English toffee (oak) are combined in a harmonious way.  A smooth, aromatic drinking wine….

Forries are able to offer their full wine list by the glass because they have a Le Verre de Vin Classic installed in their bar.  And they are utilising this world-class wine preservation system to the full, as it should be.  It is an established trend that all establishments offer wine by the glass now, and a Le Verre de Vin wine preservation system allows you to offer a full range, as Forries does, because it preserves any bottle of wine (still or sparkling) for 21 days after opening.  The added benefits of having a system like this in place means that your wine profits will increase substantially, especially if you offer the whole range by the glass.  And then additional savings come in eliminating wastage.  Opened wine is preserved, meaning that wastage should be a thing of the past.  It is gratifying to see a Le Verre de Vin system being used so effectively.

And our meal was well prepared and tasty and was complemented by the wines that we had chosen.  It is extremely satisfying being able to go and have a delicious meal and to be able to choose to have a glass of some really premium wine to go along with it – it is well worth experiencing what Forester’s Arms has to offer.
