You know when you have one of those moments when everything seems perfect?…  Well yesterday was one of those.  We headed off to Stellenbosch to have a meal at The Fat Butcher.  And the whole experience became one of those perfect moments…

In the Western Cape, we are having the most glorious extended, warm autumn – so the weather was perfect for sitting outside on the courtyard next to a lovely green garden – it’s hard to believe that it’s June already and we have such incredible weather.  We went in the late afternoon, so it was quiet and felt like we had the place to ourselves.

Part of the experience is that the waiter brings some cuts of meat to explain them to you and to show you what they look like.  The Fat Butcher prides itself on the quality of its meat – free-range and grass fed.  So we placed our orders and turned to the wine list.

Now, as we had a way to drive to get home, we were definitely looking at the wine by the glass option, AND my partner wanted white wine and I wanted red wine – that’s where wine by the glass is a must!  With a Le Verre de Vin system, The Fat Butcher can offer a whole range of wines by the glass. Currently they are offering one label per cultivar.  On chatting to the manager, he says that they are finding that their Le Verre de Vin works really well – it keeps the wine fresh for extended periods (up to 21 days) and he was most excited about how it keeps the bubbly fresh too, so they can offer bubbly by the glass and know that they can reseal the bottle and retain the bubbles for up to 3 weeks.

My partner had the Glenelly Unwooded Chardonay which he announced was delicious.  I had the smooth, easy drinking Lyngrove Collection Shiraz. The manager told me that they are currently redoing their wine list and will then extend their wine by the glass offering – I am looking forward to returning and sampling some more of their expanded offering and would love to try their top of the range wines by the glass with their to-die-for steaks!! Hmmm… and I wonder if they can’t enhance the wine by the glass experience with a little tweak …. They could bring the wine by the glass wine option to pour it at the table – in that way the customer can be sure that they are getting the wine that they have ordered and it just gives that edge to the experience.

And now onto the steak. Oh My Word!!  It is one of the best steaks, if not the best, that I have ever had. Cooked to perfection, just how I like it, great natural flavour and tender – my mouth is watering again as I sit here remembering it!!

So all in all a perfect meal in a beautiful setting, with delicious wine.  And then to complete the experience we got to drive back to Cape Town driving into a glorious Cape Town autumn sunset – a picture perfect ending to a wonderful meal – life doesn’t get better than that!!
